A Unique Architectural Gem
A UNESCO World Heritage site and an icon in Barcelona right on one of its main avenues. A work of the one and only Gaudi, it is part of the many notable buildings that line Passeig de Gracia, in this article we’ll briefly cover the ins and outs of this iconic building.
History and Design
Originally built in 1877 by Emilio Sala Cortés (one of Gaudí’s architecture professors) as part of a new series of buildings popping up on Passeig de Gracia which was relatively new at the time. In 1903 Josep Batlló y Casanovas, a textile industrialist who owned several factories in Barcelona and a prominent businessman purchased the building which gave it its namesake. Batllo hired Gaudi to redesign the building which he managed to do without having to demolish it; the remodeling took place between 1904 and 1906 which completely changed the facade.

Beautiful photo! Gaudi was a genius and inspiration! I like to think I’m somewhat of an architect myself…nowhere near his level though!
