Ahh, Christmas. Ideally, it’s a time of joy and prosperity. It’s always one of the most anticipated parts of the year. If you happen to be in Barcelona or want a change of scenery from the festivities you’re used to, we’ll discuss what the city has to offer this season.

Christmas markets

There are many Christmas markets throughout the city that are worth the stroll, such as around Gran Via, but the most famous ones include the Fira de Santa Llucia and Fira de Nadal at Sagrada Familia. This is a smaller one, but with the basilica in the background, I find it hard to beat.

Catalan Traditions

Caga Tio: A well-known tradition where kids feed a log and hit it to get their gifts

Caganer Figures: One of the more eye-catching and funny figures in Barcelona sold in many shops that’s hard to miss

Christmas lights

There is a turning on lights ceremony around Passeig de Gracia usually held on the last Thursday of November and is a must if you’re in the city, you can also stroll around afterward and see all the lights around the area as most of the center has lights set up on most streets

Festive food

If you’re in Barcelona for the holiday season there are foods you must try that are typical around this time such as Turron (nougat) usually made with almonds or nuts but comes in many different flavors, neules(crispy wafers), and La escudella i carn d’olla (a typical Catalan stew) which I’ve and is very good. Honorable mention includes having a hot chocolate with churros perfect for the cooler temperatures around this time of year.
