Located roughly 40 mins north of Barcelona ,Girona is an ideal day trip destination if you happen to be visiting bcn.

How to get there

The quickest and most convenient way to get there is by taking the high-speed train. Two operators service the route and it takes roughly 40 mins from Barcelona Sants; tickets are usually no more than 20 euros. The train station in Girona is right in the center of the city which is perfect for getting to the main spots

What to do

Girona despite its size has quite to offer as far as sights are concerned which I will mention below:

Girona’s Old Town (Barri Vell): The historic center of the city with its narrow cobblestone streets and beautiful old buildings here you can find landmarks like the Girona Cathedral, and Arab Baths.

The Jewish Quarter (El Call): According to the Catalonia tourism website, It dates back to the 12th century and is one of Europe’s most well-preserved Jewish quarters. It was inhabited by the city’s Jewish community until 1492, the year in which the Jews were expelled from the country. It’s a perfect spot for history enthusiasts.

The Eiffel Bridge (Pont de Ferro): Designed by Gustave Eiffel’s company, offering lovely river and town views.

The City Walls: Dating back to the Roman foundation of Gerunda in the 1st century BC, Girona’s city walls are walkable and offer stunning panoramic views of the town and surrounding landscape.

Where to eat
I would personally recommend finding a spot to eat in the Old Town as they tend to be quite cozy many of them offering local food. On my last trip there I enjoyed brunch at La Fàbrica Girona, a unique spot with a great variety of delicious options and a welcoming vibe. Perfect for refueling after walking around as we did!
